Porcelain Crowns for Tooth Preservation in Kenmore

Your teeth really are designed to last a lifetime. But along the way there might be damage that threatens the longevity of a tooth. In that case, Dr. Taba may recommend a porcelain crown. Also called a dental cap, a crown is placed over a tooth to preserve it or to restore a tooth’s natural strength, size and shape. A crown can also correct the appearance of a damaged tooth. When bonded to your tooth, a crown fully encapsulates the visible portion of your tooth above the gum line.

There are several circumstances that may warrant a crown. These include:

  • A tooth that is so severely damaged by decay that a tooth-colored filling or an inlay or an onlay will not suffice to repair the tooth
  • A tooth that is deeply cracked, in which case a crown will hold the tooth together
  • A tooth that is an abutment for a dental bridge
  • A tooth that has had a root canal and needs added strength and protection
  • A tooth restoration that is attached to a dental implant
  • A tooth that is misshaped or significantly smaller than adjacent teeth

Porcelain crowns are appropriate for children as well as adults. A young child’s primary teeth may only be temporary, but they are essential for them to be able to eat and speak properly. Moreover, they serve as important placeholders for permanent teeth. For these reasons, Dr. Taba may recommend a crown if your child has a seriously decayed or damaged tooth.

The Porcelain Crowns Seattle Smiles About

Porcelain or all-ceramic crowns are ideal for blending in with the natural color of your smile. And with the manufacturing and technological advances in dentistry, porcelain crowns are as strong and durable as their metal counterparts.

Setting a crown on a tooth usually requires two appointments with Dr. Taba. At the first visit, we’ll take x-rays of your tooth and anesthetize and the tooth and surrounding gum tissue. Next, we’ll need to file down the tooth along the sides as well as on the biting surface in order to make room for the crown to rest comfortably between your other teeth. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken and sent to our dental lab where your crown is made. During this time, you’ll wear a temporary. When your permanent crown is ready, you’ll come back to our Kenmore dental practice where Dr. Taba will cement the crown into place.
