Preventing & Treating Periodontal Disease in Seattle & Beyond
How common is periodontal disease? So common that four out of five patients have it without even knowing they do. What's more, if it's not treated while in a mild stage, it can have a severe impact on your oral health. In fact, periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. All of this means that if you or anyone in your family is struggling with any of periodontal disease's most common symptoms, you should seek care immediately.
The symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Red, swollen, or puffy gums
- Bleeding gums
- Tender or sensitive gum tissue
- Gaps between teeth
- Receding gum tissue
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose teeth
In its earliest stages, periodontal disease is often symptomless. It's because of this that Dr. Taba tells patients to come in at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. We can diagnose periodontal disease during any regular checkup and help you create a plan to treat it.
For patients with a mild form of periodontal disease, Dr. Taba may only recommend more frequent cleanings, plus more brushing and flossing at home. For patients with a severe form, however, we may recommend a form of periodontal therapy known as deep cleaning. Deep cleaning involves two techniques known as scaling and root planing. With scaling and root planing, Dr. Taba will remove tartar and plaque from below the gum line one quadrant at a time. He may also prescribe an antibiotic to help treat infection.
Gum Disease and Overall Wellbeing
Besides saving your smile, treating periodontal disease with periodontal therapy will also help your overall health. Studies have linked gum disease health problems in other parts of the body, including:
- Heart disease
- Bacterial pneumonia
- Preterm birth or low birth weight
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, Dr. Taba will work with you to provide comprehensive periodontal therapy. Through periodontal therapy, you can enjoy better oral health. Treating gum disease will also help you enjoy better overall health and well-being.
