What Is An Oral Appliance?

An oral appliance is fitted like an orthodontic retainer and must be worn during sleep to prevent snoring and obstructive sleep apnea disorders. They are designed to rest securely both on the upper and lower teeth. Oral appliances work to keep the airways open by holding the jaw in a forward position. They address bite issues, nighttime teeth grinding, obstructive sleep apnea, or jaw joint malfunctions. We offer a wide range of state-of-the-art designs at our office based on your preferences and treatment goals.

Types of Oral Appliances

Oral appliances may provide relief if you have mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or haven't been helped by CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy. Oral appliances are of two types including:

Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)

Mandibular advancement devices resemble a mouth guard used in sports and are generally used to treat sleep apnea. The devices have metal hinges that will rest over the upper and lower dental mouth arches and work to keep the lower jaw forward.

Tongue Retaining Device

A tongue retaining device consists of a splint that keeps the airway open by holding the tongue in a forward position. These appliances improve your sleep and reduce the intensity of your snoring. Tongue retaining devices are easier to use than CPAP machines.

What Is the Procedure for Your Oral Appliance?

Oral appliances are custom-designed using physical or digital impressions of your teeth. These impressions are sent over to our dental lab, where the device is fabricated. Once your oral appliance is ready, you will have to return to our dental office for a fitting. You will be required to try out the appliance, and if necessary, we will make the required adjustments to maximize its comfort and effectiveness. In addition, we will also give you detailed instructions on how to clean the oral appliance and maintain it.

We provide solutions that will improve your oral health and sleep issues. Visit our office, Amin Tabatabaian DDS PLLC, at 5701 Northeast Bothell Way Suite 3, Kenmore WA, 98028. You can also reach Dentist Kenmore WA at (425) 486-9233 and schedule an appointment.
